BACK TO BASICS:
What we put on our bodies is just as important as what we put into our bodies (that's our motto). Using oil as part of a daily beauty routine dates back centuries. Before we got caught up with creams, toners and serums for just about every crease on our bodies, oils reigned supreme for their potency, multipurpose functionality and simple sources. We encourage you to go back to the basics and experiment with powerful, multi-use oils and experience them firsthand. Read on for our guide to Oils 101.
Benefits of Oils:.
Simplicity - Oil blends contain few, high quality ingredients (meaning no preservatives, fillers or chemicals are absorbed into your skin or the environment).
Nutrient-rich - High quality oils pass onto you the nutrients from the plants they are sourced from (think: avocado oil, lavender oil, etc).
Longevity -Each application requires just a few drops, so your oil will actually last you longer than most other products.
Versatility - Whether your skin is sensitive, dry, oily or acne-prone, there is an effective blend for every skin type, and so many ways to use them!
The key to using oils is the application technique + finding oil(s) that match your skin type! Here are a few tips for applying oils:
Moisturizer - Apply 3-6 drops of oil to your beautiful face in the morning and evening after cleansing (or even try oil in lieu of a cleanser). Gently massage the oil into your skin moving your fingers in circular motions.
Makeup Remover - Apply the oil directly to the face and/or eyes and gently wipe with a facecloth or cotton pad.
Cleanser - Pour several drops of oil into your palm. Rub your hands together to warm the oil and then smooth it over your face. Massage the oil into your pores. Then use a warm water washcloth gently across the face to remove the oil. Rinse with warm water.
Body Oil: After bathing, apply oil liberally all over that bod. For an extra fancy experience, warm the oil and give yourself a full body massage (known as abhyanga in Ayurveda) before bathing.
Frizz Release: Oil is a GREAT frizz-fighter for steamy days or unruly flyaways. Smooth a few drops on frizzy areas or dried ends for an easy, immediate tamer. The men in your life can also use oil as a beard or facial hair smoother.
OILS FOR SKIN TYPES (OILY TO DRY)
Key Ingredients: When choosing oil blends, knowing what key ingredients work for your skin type will help determine which oil is a best fit for your specific needs. Here’s a breakdown of some of our favorite ingredients by skin type:
Grapeseed Oil: Considered a “dry oil” because of how light it is. Grapeseed oil is also full of antioxidants and Vitamin E.
Jojoba Seed Oil: Jojoba is an intelligent moisturizer, actually a wax, most similar to the skin’s sebum (the skin's natural oils) and helps balance oily skin. It is suggested that "jojoba has anti-inflammatory effect and it can be used on a variety of skin conditions including skin infections, skin aging,etc...”1
Lavender: Lavender is known for antiseptic, anti-inflammatory qualities. “Research has confirmed that lavender produces slight calming, soothing, and sedative effects when its scent is inhaled”2. Other great essential oils for oily skin include: Cedarwood Oil, Grapefruit Oil, Orange Oil,Tea Tree Oil,etc.
Normal to Dry Skin:
Apricot Kernel Oil: An oil rich in gamma linoleic acid which is known to help the skin to maintain moisture balance. The light texture of apricot kernel oil is great for most skin types and absorbs quickly. (Almond oil is very similar and has these qualities as well!).
Avocado Oil: All the amazing nutrients of eating an avocado come with using the oil. Great for dryer skin, since the oil is on the thicker, more nourishing side. It is high in Omega-3 fatty acids and Vitamins A, D and E, all amazing for keeping the skin hyrdrated!
Peppermint Oil: “When applied topically, it has a soothing and cooling effect on skin irritations” 3 . We personally love the refreshing feel of peppermint oil all the time! Other great essential oils include: Bergamot, Geranium, Rosemary, Sage
